Henry V. L. Bird

Henry Bird, a twenty-one-year-old store clerk, enlisted in the Petersburg Grays (Company C, 12th Virginia Infantry) two days after Virginia's secession. In July 1862 he caught a mild strain of typhoid fever that kept him out of the war for seventeen months. Returning to his unit in 1864, he fought alongside them through the Overland Campaign and into the trenches at Petersburg. At the October 1864 battle of Burgess' Mill, Bird became a prisoner-of-war and was confined at Point Lookout, Maryland. Following Appomattox, while he waited to be released, Bird received a letter from his father:

"The state is quieting down and people are going to work, and the war will soon be a thing of the past. I [have] been to see Genl Lee and he told me that all the soldiers who desired to return to their native places . . . should take the oath of allegiance to the U. States and become god citizens."

Margaret Randolph BirdBird returned to Petersburg in June 1865. Apologizing to his fiancĂ©e, Margaret Randolph, he took the oath of allegiance—the prerequisite to receiving a marriage license. Facing an uncertain future, Bird penned a note to Margaret, "My darling, we are all strangers in the land now…" Bird lived in Petersburg until his death in 1903.

HUGE Folio CIVIL WAR 1861 ScrapBook HARPERS Ledger DIARY Charles DeWitt RAILROAD

This is a super unique and breathtaking, one of a kind Civil War relic. Measuring 18" x 16", this MONSTROUS Ledger is absolutely FULL of Civil War Newspaper and Harpers clippings and illustrations!

Originally a Railroad ledger for New York State, as you can still see some of the entries on some paged under the clippings, this HUGE diary is 174 pages of one of a kind information and pictures of the Civil War!

Owned by the estate of Continental Congressman and Revolutionary War veteran Charles Dewitt, near Hurley, NY, this was in the families' possession when we acquired it through another seller. The front of the dairy stated the provenance well, No 15, September 18th through October 16th, 1861, Chas. A. DeWitt. This was probably compiled by Charles Adolphus Dewitt, great grandson of the famous statesman!

The news clippings document battles, soldiers, information, artillery, and contain illystrated maps, battle scenes, portraits, and political cartoons. Truly a spectacular presence directly from the heart of the Civil War in 1861. Charles A. must have been exuberant in paying close attention to the Rebellion as it progressed.

The binding is strong, with a lightly worn marbled cover bound at the tips and on the spine in red leather. The spine contains a title that states FREIGHT EARNINGS  and then further down  U. S. Ex CO, and again the ledger was heavily filled in with info from all around New York State in the years 1858-1861. The clippings are all securely pasted, so the pages take on a waviness but are very sturdy.

Own this tremendously large and most importantly unique piece of American Civil War History today! Good luck!

Some info about the source estate owner, Charles Dewitt:

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Charles DeWitt (1727–1787) was an American miller and statesman from Kingston, New York. He served as a delegate to the Continental Congress.

Charles was the only son of Johannes and Mary Brodhead DeWitt. He was born on April 27, 1727. The DeWitt family lived in Kingston, and he was raised there, along with his three sisters. Johannes, and later Charles, operated the flour mill at Greenkill (in what is now Rosendale, New York). The first mill at the site had been built by Mattys Mattysen Van Keuren in 1677. Since he had no children, when he died it passed to his nephew who was a DeWitt.

DeWitt married Blandina DuBois (1731–1765) on December 20, 1754 in Hurley (town), New York. The couple would have five children. Their grandson Charles G. DeWitt would later serve in the U.S. Congress.

DeWitt was first elected to New York's Colonial Assembly to represent Ulster County in 1768. He was returned to that seat in every election until the Assembly was replaced in the American Revolution by a Provisional Congress for the colony in 1775. That year he was one of the members who voted to approve the work of the Continental Congress. As the revolution drew near, and the Ulster militia was expanded, he was named Colonel of the 2nd Ulster Militia regiment.

Charles served in the New York Provincial Congress from 1775 to 1777, as well as continuing his militia duties. In that congress he served on the committee that drafted the states first constitution. He served on the Committee of Safety, and after active warfare slowed, under the new government he was elected to the New York Assembly for 1781–1785 and 1787. The assembly in turn sent him as a delegate to the Continental Congress in 1781 and 1784.

Throughout these years DeWitt also published a newspaper (The Ulster Sentinel), and supplied a great deal of flour to the Continental Army. He died on August 27, 1787 and is buried in the Dutch Reformed Cemetery at Hurley (town), New York. He had written his will on July 7, 1776 as he prepared to set out for the defense of New York City. He left the mill to his son Gerrit, who expanded it in 1806, and the water-powered mill would continue in operation until 1922.

War of the Rebellion Official Records Civil War 2 DVDs

The Master Edition of The War of the Rebellion is the result of two years effort creating a two DVD product that contains the entire OR in both searchable and page perfect presentation. In this edition, every page looks exactly as it would if you opened a physical book. That means that all the images, tables and indexes are properly organized and easily readable - something that doesn't exist in most digital versions of the OR. In most instances, the tables have been all jumbled by the process to convert the books to text - and any images are completely gone - but that is not the case in the Master Edition.

Here is a sample table page and image page exactly as you will see in the Master Edition OR. (Note: Images have been shrunk to fit more nicely into the ad.)

As you can see, this table is fully understandable and useful. If you have looked at tables in other versions of the OR (our low cost version included, it looks like a jumble of text because the normal page to text process does not know how to maintain table integrity.)

So if you are looking for a picture perfect OR at a fraction of the cost of purchasing a text set, this is the collection you have been waiting for. Here are the full details of what is included in this two DVD series.

Family HOLY BIBLE 1836 Civil War JOHN WILLIS 192ND PA 2 CDVs IN UNIFORM Antique

You are bidding on a family lot/Holy Bible owned by Corporal John K Willis of the 192nd PA Vol Infantry. The Bible, published by Leavitt and Allen c1853, is in rough shape, but still contains both covers (stamped in gilt, red leather, some bubbling, still attached by cords), as well as all of the pages within. The binding is still intact as well, but a few pages, including the illustrated color frontis, have detached, and the cords are highly stressed and broken in a few places, forming a very uneasy binding situation. Family pages are present but detached with some edgewear. All pages gilt edged. Interesting ephemera includes a bank ceryificate and a marriage certificate. The highlight of the lot is 2 CDVs of Coproral Willis, one in full uniform with his gun in hand. Great pics with some minor wear, old fold on one CDV but has flattened nicely. Good luck! Regiment Name 192 Pennsylvania Inf.Organized at Philadelphia for 100 days July, 1864. At Camp Cadwalader till July 23. Moved to Baltimore, Md., July 23. Revolutionary WAR Hand Signed Lt COLONEL Eben GRAY 4th CONNECTICUT Giles Curtiss

You are bidding on a Revolutionary War pay voucher/document from September 16th, 1782, Verplanks Point, NY. (Verplanck is also known for its Revolutionary War history, specifically the location of the strategic Kings Ferry between Stony Point and Verplanck's Point, which George Washington's army used to cross the Hudson on its march to Yorktown, Virginia, in 1781). The document originates from the Connecticut 4th regiment, and is signed by two prominent members, Lt. Giles Curtiss as well as Lt Colonel Ebenezer Gray.  Gray had communicated at length with General Washington throughout the war, as many handwritten docs by Washington to Gray have shown up for sale in the past. The document is signed boldly by both Giles and Gray, as shown. The seams to the letter show some browning and splitting, but have held up and kep the sheet, which measures roughly 14" x 9", in nice shape. The script is clear and legible, maing this worthy of framing, as it is from two prominent men, during the thick of the Battles for our Independence in 1782. Good luck! More about these men below:

LT COL. EBENEZER GRAY (1743-1795)

At the outbreak of the Revolution, Ebenezer Gray (1743-1795) was a practicing lawyer in his Windham, Connecticut, and was meditating a removal to the Wyoming Valley in Pennsylvania, in the colonization of which his uncle, Col. Eliphalet Dyer (Member of the Continental Congress), was active. On May 1, 1775, he became Second Lieutenant in Israel Putnam’s regiment and served through the siege of Boston. He was promoted on January 1, 1775, to be First Lieutenant and Quartermaster of Colonel John Durkee’s regiment, and marched with it to New York, where General Samuel H. Parsons appointed him his Brigade-Major, on August 31, 1776. On January 1, 1777, he became Major of the Sixth Connecticut, and Lieutenant-Colonel of the Seventh Connecticut on October 15, 1778. On January 1, 1781, Ebenezer Gray was commissioned Lieutenant Colonel of the new Fourth Connecticut Regiment, under Col. Zebulon Butler, serving until January 1, 1783, when Gray was assigned to the Third Connecticut under Col. Samuel B. Webb, serving until June 1783. He then resumed his law practice in Windham, Connecticut.
----------------------------------
EBENEZER GRAY, the eldest child of Samuel Gray, fo Windham, Connecticut, and grandson of Dr. Ebenezer and Mary (Gardiner) Gray, of Lebanon and Windham, was born in Windham on July 26, 1743.  His mother was Lydia, daughter of Colonel Thomas and Lydia (Backus) Dyer, of Windham; a brother was graduated at Dartmouth College in 1771, and a sister married the Rev. Enoch Huntington (Yale 1759).  At the outbreak of the Revolution he was a practicing lawyer in his native town, and was meditating a removal to the Wyoming Valley in Pennsylvania, in the colonization of which his uncle, Colonel Eliphalet Dyer (Yale 1740), had taken so deep an interest.  On May 1, 1775, he became Second Lieutenant in Israel Putnam's regiment and served through the siege of Boston.  He was promoted on January 1, 1775, to be First Lieutenant and Quartermaster of Colonel Durkee's regiment, and marched with it to New York, where General Parsons appointed him his Brigade-Major, on August 31, 1776.  On January 1, 1777, he became Major of the Sixth Connecticut, and Lieutenant-Colonel of the Seventh on October 15, 1778.  He remained in the service until June, 1783.  He then resumed his law practice in Windham, and on March 30,1786, married, Sarah, eldest daughter of John and Jerusha (Stoughton) Staniford, of the same town.  He died on June 18, 1795, in his 52d year, leaving an estate which was inventoried at 907.  His widow died in 1835, at the age of 72.  Their children were two sons (one graduated at Yale in 1805) and one daughter.  Extracts from three or four of his leters, while in camp during the Revolution, are printed in Miss Larned's History of Windham County.  AUTHORITIES  Johnston, Yale in the Revolution, 234–35. Story of the Great War - publisher's broadside 32p, illustrated WWI tanks RARE

ITEM DESCRIPTION:

Why Every American Should Know, a publisher's broadside pamphlet. 32 p, softcover, binding is OK however getting loose @ cover, many photos, facts, newspaper cartoons that aren't in the book, a rare item.

---> Item Specifics are located at top of listing, along with photos <---

SHIPPING:

Everything ships with tracking numbers. I ship most everything through the Post Office. If you desire different - UPS, or FedEx, for instance, or quicker service like Express Mail - no big deal just ask and I'll get you a quote for the adjust rate.

SHIPPING DISCOUNTS: I don't charge full price for shipping multiple items. I'm not that technical of a guy, and I can't figure out how to make fair shipping discounts automatic too -  much like algebra for me. Please ask me how much combined orders would cost to ship; I can tell you they are always  less to ship than the posted stock shipping prices would add up to; you will get a shipping discount with multiple purchases.

I am not allowed to have you over here at this location due to homeowners, insurance, and government regulations, however if you are local I can meet you nearby for $1.50 to pick up items.

All USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate Boxes are available - just ask, and stuff as many books as you can into one! (Media Mail is still less most of the time.).

Registered Mail Service available.

INTERNATIONAL: Due to technical limitations, I only list USPS Priority Mail Rates here. First Class International Mail is available, however I will have to weigh the item to figure the cost. For example, for Canada it is around $6.00 for most books. Please ask for a quote  - and remember, some books are too heavy for this service that cuts off at 3 pounds.

APO/FPO Flat Rate Priority Mail Boxes are available for eligible addresses. The cost is $12.95 for all the books you can fit in one.

I'll ship international to anywhere! Email me for rates to places not listed; otherwise rates are in the auction. Sometimes I make a mistake, and may have a lightweight item listed under (higher) international shipping flat rate. Let me know if I do this! NOTE: This does not apply to export prohibited items.

NOTE: Since most International orders are sent with Flat Rate Envelopes or Boxes, you can purchase additional books if they will fit in the package! Ask me!

Airmail M-Bags (media bags)  are available for International shipments of media items. These take a LONG time, but are low cost - the first 11 pounds to:

 Canada $27.99 & $2.55 each additional pound;

 Mexico $29.99 & $2.65 each additional pound;

 Europe & Japan $55.99 & $2.55 each additional pound;

 Australia $56.99 & $5.10 each additional pound.

International Buyers – Please Note:

Import duties, taxes and charges are not included in the item price or shipping charges. These charges are the buyer's responsibility.

Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding/buying.

TURNAROUND: Items are shipped within 24 hours of payment. Nothing is shipped on Saturday (usually) or Sundays (post office is closed!). I will email you tracking information when the item is packed.

PACKING: I am aware how to pack items, and have purchased / scavenged for appropriate supplies. If you have any special packing needs, let me know. I'm not going to pack a $200 book in a bubble wrap envelope; don't worry, you'll get a box. My labels are laser printed no handwritten junk. I recycle as I am able to and will pass on that discount, when available

PAYMENT: I accept PayPal, Moneybookers, and PayMate at this time.

QUESTIONS ? Quis Voco?:

If you are not happy, please contact me. If you have questions, please contact me; I'll even be happy to provide my phone number so we can talk about items. I know I am not the best photographer in the world; I got a good camera, I just don't work it well, but I'll be happy to provide better pics if you need them. Any question is a good question!

I was a collector however my health is failing, so I am selling everything I own.

Yes, I do have some experience - I sold books and antiques in the 1990's, and even worked for a (live old style country "colonel") auctioneer when a teenager - and have always collected items. I have a large reference library about collectibles, so I am not ignorant of what is desirable, and how to describe things.

HEROES IN OUR MIDST BOOK DECATUR MACON CO IL MILITARY TRIBUTES VETERANS ALL WARS

Heroes in Our Midst

Macon County's Men and Women and Their Families

Author:  E. E. "Pete" Nicholls.

Publishing Information:  Privately published.

Description:  This is a compilation of pictures and stories submitted by veterans in Decatur, Macon County, Illinois.  From the cover:  "Heroes in our Midst" started out as a book about Gulf War veterans and their families.  Each page has pictures and a short story written by the family.  I had so many requests from families to include service people of other wars, I finally decided to go ahead and include any veteran of any war who sent a picture in...We are the lucky ones, we fought a war and walked away from it.  But we must keep alive the memory of those who didn't."

From the brief biographical sketch provided, and the long list of medals awarded to him, including an Asiatic-Pacific theatre Ribbon with 2 Bronze Battle Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 2 Bronze Battle Stars, Bronze Star Medal, Silver Star Medal and Purple Heart Medal, it is obvious that Mr. Nicholls is one of the Heroes in our Midst.  He designated all  profit from the book to go to the Salvation Army.  Out of respect for that request and for his courage and service, all proceeds of the sale of this book will be given to the Salvation Army.

Condition:  Very good condition, no marks, unpaginated, full of illustrations.

If you have any questions, or if you wish additional pictures, please email me. TERMS: Payment is appreciated within five days. U. S. shipping will be $3.00 for media mail. Priority shipping at cost is available upon request. Media mail is the most economical shipping method, but it can take as long as two weeks to arrive and occasionally up to one month.  Your order will be shipped within one to two business days after payment is cleared. Please see my other auctions and combine multiple purchases to save on shipping.   Repeat Buyers:  If you have bought from me before, remind me and shipping is free.

FAQ:

When can I expect my package?

Items are delivered via USPS First Class mail (2-5 business days) with no longer than one (1) day handling time. Your item should not be considered untimely unless it has not been delivered after one full week from your payment date. Please consider weekends and holidays when anticipating your package arrival date as well.

Is your transit packaging secure?

Great care will be taken to ensure that your item arrives in excellent condition. Prints are shipped flat on cardboard and sealed in a water-resistant envelope or, for posters or maps, a crush-resistant tube. We have shipped thousands of prints in this manner and found it to be very reliable. Because of this, we have every reason to believe our packaging methods are superior and can not be responsible for variables outside of our control (postal handlers and carriers, etc.).

How long do I have to pay?

Payment is expected within (7) seven days. This 7 day period may be used to acquire multiple items for the multiple item shipping discount. If 7 days is insufficient, please submit your payment and we will hold your shipment until you have acquired all your desired purchases. The multiple item discount will be applied on all items shipped together.

Should a payment issue arise, PLEASE DON'T HESITATE to contact us. We are happy to work with you!

Do you offer a multiple-item shipping discount?

Yes.  Please refer to the table below for costs and conditions specific to your order and location.

Please consider these costs BEFORE you bid, as a bid is an agreement to our terms of sale and we will not adjust our terms after-the-fact.  Thanks for your kind understanding!

The above pricing applies on multiple purchases shipped together.  When combining orders that include both Buy it Now and Auction-style purchases, shipping will be $3.95 USD for the first item ($5.50 international), $1.95 for each additional auction-style purchase and free for each additional Buy it Now purchase.

These rates reflect items that are shipped flat.  The multiple item shipping discount only applies on items that can be shipped together, therefore items shipped rolled (such as posters) do not qualify for combined shipping with this item.

What do the shipping charges cover?

The shipping costs associated with this item cover:

        - Shipping your package

        - Shipping materials such as tubes, envelopes, paper, cardboard, etc.

        - Selling costs such as insertion fees, final value fees, and electronic payment fees.

        - Transportation costs (applied to international sales only)

Unfortunately eBay doesn't allow us to sell on their site for free, which means a higher overall cost to the buyer.  However, we can lower these cost by avoiding double jeopardy; that is, paying fees on fees, translating to an even higher buying price.  Please don't hesitate to contact us for a detailed explanation of this, and thank you for your consideration of this matter before placing your bid.

If I contact you, will it take a long time for a reply?

Absolutely not! You can always expect a reply within a few hours. If you have not heard a reply, please write again. We’ve found that eBay’s messaging system is far from 100% reliable, and we might not have received your message. If you continue experiencing contact issues, please e-mail us directly at service@victoriaheilshorn.com.

What is your return policy?

We will happily exchange any defective or problematic merchandise. However, cash refunds are not allowed, as your bid is a COMMITMENT to buy according to eBay policy. Therefore, please be confident of your desire for items BEFORE you bid. Also, this return policy does NOT cover damage sustained during the shipping process, as this is beyond our control. We ask that you please contact us with any potential issue BEFORE leaving negative feedback, as we are committed to your 100% satisfaction and feel any problem can easily be resolved.
