This sweeping history of the entire war serves as an important memento of earliest days of photographic Civil War histories Originally issued in 16 sections, each with color plate made from paintings by Henry A Ogden. Real value lies in the photographs some 744 in all. Text is interesting because it reflects the pre WWI perception of the Civil war Several maps, diagrams and other illustrations included. Occasional errors surface as, with the switched captions on page 264 and the work lacks an index.A very nice, must have part of any Civil War library collection I am not an expert on everything I sell, so some of my knowledge may be limited. CDV CAPT. ABNER DOUBLEDAY CIVIL WAR BRADY PHOTO

This is a rare Civil War CDV carte de visite of Captain Abner Doubleday.  As can be seen from the back stamp, the albumen photograph is from a negative by Matthew Brady ("Brady's National Portrait Gallery"). The print was published by E. Anthony of New York City.   The CDV measures 3 3/4 x 2 7/16 inches and is in very good condition.  The back has a 19th century handwritten pencil inscription identifying Doubleday.  

Abner Doubleday (1819-1893) was a career United States Army officer and Union general in the Civil War.  He fired the first shot in defense of Fort Sumter, the opening battle of the war, and had a pivotal role in the early fighting at the Battle of Gettysburg. Gettysburg was his finest hour, but his relief by Major General George Meade caused lasting enmity between the two men.  In San Francisco, after the war, he obtained a patent on the cable car railway that still runs there. In his final years in New Jersey, he was a prominent member and later president of the Theosophical Society.  Doubleday is often mistakenly credited with having invented baseball, although he never made such a claim, and there is no evidence to support it.

CDV GENERAL FITZ JOHN PORTER CIVIL WAR BRADY PHOTO

This is a rare Civil War CDV carte de visite of General Fitz John Porter.  As can be seen from the back stamp, the albumen photograph was taken by renowned Civil War photographer Matthew Brady.  His "National Photographic Portrait Galleries" were in Washington, D.C., and New York City.  The CDV measures 4 x 2 3/8 inches and is in very good condition.  The upper and right edges have two slight nicks.      

Fitz John Porter (1822-1901) was a career United States Army officer and a Union General during the Civil War.  He is most known for his performance at the Second Battle of Bull Run and his subsequent court martial.  Although Porter served well in the early battles of the Civil War, his military career was ruined by the controversial trial which was called by his political rivals.  Afterwards,  he worked intensely to restore his tarnished reputation for almost 25 years, when he was finally restored to the army's roll.

CDV GENERAL JOHN SEDGWICK CIVIL WAR BRADY PHOTO

This is a rare Civil War CDV carte de visite of General John Sedgwick.  As can be seen from the back stamp, the albumen photograph is from a negative by Matthew Brady ("Brady's National Portrait Gallery"). The print was published by E. & H.T. Anthony of New York City.  The CDV measures 4 x 2 3/8 inches and is in very good condition.  There is some slight rippling on the right side of the backing paper.  The back has a 19th century handwritten pencil inscription identifying Sedgwick.  

John Sedgwick (1813-1864) was a teacher, a career military officer, and a Union Army general in the Civil War.  His May 9, 1864 death at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House is often considered a tale of irony.  He was the highest ranking Union casualty in the Civil War. Although James B. McPherson was in command of an army at the time of his death and Sedgwick of a corps, Sedgwick had the most senior rank by date of all major generals killed. Upon hearing of his death, Lt. General Ulysses S. Grant, flabbergasted by the news, repeatedly asked, "Is he really dead?"
