Description -  Confederate General Robert E. Lee on his most famous horse, Traveller. Lee described his faithful horse in a letter in response to Mrs. Lee's cousin, Markie Williams, who wished to paint a portrait of Traveller: If I was an artist like you, I would draw a true picture of Traveller; representing his fine proportions, muscular figure, deep chest, short back, strong haunches, flat legs, small head, broad forehead, delicate ears, quick eye, small feet, and black mane and tail. Such a picture would inspire a poet, whose genius could then depict his worth, and describe his endurance of toil, hunger, thirst, heat and cold; and the dangers and suffering through which he has passed. He could dilate upon his sagacity and affection, and his invariable response to every wish of his rider. He might even imagine his thoughts through the long night-marches and days of the battle through which he has passed. John Esten Cooke (November 3, 1830 – September 27, 1886) was an American novelist and poet....

....In March and April 1862, Cooke served as an unpaid volunteer aide for Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart in the Confederate cavalry. Cooke was a first cousin of General Stuart's wife, Flora Cooke Stuart. On May 19, 1862, he was formally commissioned as a lieutenant and officially joined Stuart's staff. Cooke participated in the Peninsula Campaign and Stuart's subsequent ride around the Union army of George B. McClellan, later writing a detailed description of the action. During the war, he served Stuart as an aide, ordnance officer, and assistant adjutant general, earning the rank of captain. Following Stuart's death at Yellow Tavern in May 1864, Cooke served on other generals' staffs, eventually rising to the rank of major by the end of the war. In 1863, he wrote the first of several popular biographies of Stonewall Jackson. He also published a novel on Jackson, Surry of Eagle's Nest (1866) as well as a biography of Robert E. Lee, officers that he had personally known.....

This is a wonderful, full color reproduction of Confederate General Robert E. Lee, one of the most brilliant millitary minds in American history- along with a very realistic reproduction of his hand written fairwell address to his troops upon his historic, civil war ending surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia in March 1865.  A very historic item! 

Condition: This is a brand new print of both items, in full color, made to look as close to the original as possible. The professional mat as shown in the example photo IS included. The frame is NOT included. (A frame may be purchased for this item separately from us or any local art supplier. It will fit nicely in an 11X14 frame.)
