WWII World War II 2 Vintage Good Conduct Medal and Ribbon US Engraved

A Bronze medal, 1 1/4 inches in diameter, with an eagle, wings spread, standing on a closed book and sword, encircled by the words “EFFICIENCY HONOR FIDELITY”. On the reverse is a five-pointed star and a scroll between the words “FOR GOOD” and “CONDUCT”, surrounded by a wreath formed by a laurel branch on the left and an oak branch on the right. Clasps are placed on the ribbon to represent subsequent awards.

A 1 3/8 inches ribbon consisting of the following stripes: 1/16 inch Soldier Red 67157; 1/16 inch White 67101; 1/16 inch Soldier Red; 1/16 inch White; 1/16 inch Soldier Red; 1/16 inch White; center 5/8 inch Soldier Red; 1/16 inch White; 1/16 inch Soldier Red; 1/16 inch White; 1/16 inch Soldier Red; 1/16 inch White; and 1/16 inch Soldier Red.

a. The Good Conduct Medal was established by Executive Order 8809, dated 28 June 1941, and authorized the award for soldiers completing three years active service after that date. The criteria was amended by Executive Order 9323, dated 31 March 1943, to authorize award for three years service after 7 December 1941 or one year service while the United States is at war. Executive Order 10444, dated 10 April 1953, revised the criteria to authorize award for three years service after 27 August 1940; one year service after 7 December 1941 while the United States is at war; and award for the first award for service after 27 June 1950 upon termination of service, for periods less than three years, but more than one year.

b. The medal was designed by Mr. Joseph Kiselewski and approved by the Secretary of War on 30 October 1942. The eagle, with wings spread, denotes vigilance and superiority. The horizontal sword denotes loyalty, and the book represents knowledge acquired and ability gained. On the reverse, the lone star denotes merit. The wreath of laurel and oak leaves denotes reward and strength.

c. The second and subsequent awards are indicated by the wear of the clasp with loop on the ribbon. Bronze clasps indicate the second (two loops) through fifth award (five loops); silver clasps indicate sixth (one loop) through tenth award (five loops); and gold clasps indicate eleventh (one loop) through the fifteenth award (5 loops).

Payment Terms

I prefer PayPal but will accept other forms of payment. If another method of payment is necessary, please contact me.

Payment is appreciated within 7 days. Auctions that are not satisfied within seven days may be cancelled.

Shipping

I will combine shipments for multiple auction winners depending on the lots. Multiple auction winners paying on the same invoice qualify for combined shipping rates. I try to ship at my cost so that my buyers benefit from paying reasonable shipping charges. In order to have shipments combined, multiple lot winners must wait to receive the invoice before sending payment. Combined shipments must be paid on the same invoice. I will not “retroactively” combine shipments. I ship within 24-hours of receiving payment, sometimes immediately. Do not pay if you are bidding on multiple lots. I’ll understand if you are bidding one or more of my other auctions.

All shipments will be sent USPS, either priority mail, parcel post, or first class, depending on the size/weight of the items purchased. Small items (13 oz or less) will be shipped via 1st Class Mail. Buyer is responsible for all shipping costs unless specified otherwise in a particular auction.

I pack my sales carefully to avoid damage during shipping. Sometimes that adds weight to the package.

Shipping and handling charges generally include "Confirmation of Delivery" within USA.

Payment Terms

I prefer PayPal but will accept other forms of payment. If another method of payment is necessary, please contact me.

Payment is appreciated within 7 days. Auctions that are not satisfied within seven days may be cancelled.

Shipping

I will combine shipments for multiple auction winners depending on the lots. Multiple auction winners paying on the same invoice qualify for combined shipping rates. I try to ship at my cost so that my buyers benefit from paying reasonable shipping charges. In order to have shipments combined, multiple lot winners must wait to receive the invoice before sending payment. Combined shipments must be paid on the same invoice. I will not “retroactively” combine shipments. I ship within 24-hours of receiving payment, sometimes immediately. Do not pay if you are bidding on multiple lots. I’ll understand if you are bidding one or more of my other auctions.

All shipments will be sent USPS, either priority mail, parcel post, or first class, depending on the size/weight of the items purchased. Small items (13 oz or less) will be shipped via 1st Class Mail. Buyer is responsible for all shipping costs unless specified otherwise in a particular auction.

I pack my sales carefully to avoid damage during shipping. Sometimes that adds weight to the package.

Shipping and handling charges generally include "Confirmation of Delivery" within USA.

These four words alone were sufficient to define a Civil War Veteran’s service for those who fought on either side of the late War of the Rebellion.

Known as the “Wizard of the Saddle,” Nathan Bedford Forrest was one of only a handful of men, on either side, to enter the war as a private and end his war service a general. His exploits at Fort Donaldson, Shiloh, Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, Fort Pillow, and Nashville, among a dozen other battles were, and remain, both legendary and controversial.

Along the way he forged a reputation as one of the greatest generals of the Civil War. His ferocity as a warrior being legendary, he once claimed to have killed one more Yankee in personal combat than the twenty-nine horses killed beneath him. Forrest, more than any general other the Sherman, understood the basic premise of war: "War means fighting and fighting means killing."

Since no records of a Forrest Cavalry Corps society survive, original medals may have been issued during any of several post-war reunions, as opposed to having been struck under the authority of a formal organizational structure; and those few rare examples which survive command prices at traditional auction houses approaching $4,000!

This gleaming brass and enamel reproduction, from an original, is a massive 1.75” (45mm) wide by 3.75” (90mm) in length and weighs almost 2 oz, making it one of the largest and most elaborate of the post-civil war medals ever struck. 

In the top section can been seen the likeness of General R. E. Lee flanked by a Confederate Sailor and Soldier, along with the 3rd National Confederate flag on the left, and the Confederate Battle flag on the right.

On the face is the likeness of General Forrest while on the reverse the 3rd National Confederate flag appears once again. Because originals are so rare, each exquisite reproduction medal is marked with the date of the mold’s manufacture (2008).

This RECREATION is a must for Reenactors,

students of the American Civil War,

and Medal Collectors.
