Jones :: Measures 5 3/4 x 7 3/4" :: Complete with 600 Pages.

THIS WORK EMBRACES a full account of all the memorable Indian Wars in the United States, together with a record of terrible personal encounters with the Red Men, hairbreadth escapes, thrilling captures and bloody massacres. A full description is given of the Indian “Ghost Dances,” which have awakened intense curiosity and interest throughout the country.

The work also gives a striking description of the celebrated chief SITTING BULL, and the events attending to his tragic death. Through his prophecies of a new Messiah the powerful tribe of Sioux was seized with mysterious craze and aroused with the desperate spirit of revenge against the white settlers and the Government. The reader is then conducted through the recent Indian Wars with the Indians: Daniel Boone; General Custer; General Miles; and others. The Minnesota massacre and its terrors are full described. General Sully, Colonel Brown, General Custer, and General Sheridan appear in the narrative as conspicuous men of wonderful dash and bravery and their exploits are full narrated. This work also traces the cause which have led to hostilities between the Red Men and the White.

In Short, the aim has been to make this a standard work, THE MOST COMPLETE EVER YET WRITTEN, unsurpassed in thrilling narratives, bold adventures, critical situations, and achievements which give luster to heroism as well as barbarities which shock humanity. Throughout, the book is lavishly illustrated with thrilling scenes among the Indians.

RAJ Indian Mutiny Roberts MAPS Military WAR Sepoy ARMY

This is the illustrated 1898 colonial edition of FORTY ONE YEARS IN INDIA by Field Marshal Lord Roberts of Kandahar — featuring manuscript notes by the original owner …

Scans of this book may take a few moments to load: if so, your patience is appreciated…

Extensively annotated example of this classic military history of the Raj, including textual and cartographic emendations by contemporary military officer …

Hardback, more than five inches by eight tall (circa 125 mm x 203 mm if you prefer) is bound in its original blind-stamped boards, slightly bumped at lower edges. Note distress to head of back-strip protecting the intact spine.

First colonial edition in one volume, published in London by Richard Bentley and Son, 1898. Provenance through owner's name to page one and distinctive manuscript markings throughout. Although interior condition is overall very good, book may display minor signs of use or age — such as taped repair to reverse of map at p140, for example — consistent with a printed object of this vintage. All xxii preliminary pages + 597 pp main text are complete and otherwise correct.

From subaltern to commander-in-chief …

…  includes a fine account of the Indian Mutiny …

The work's 41 illustrations include several fold out maps …

¶ Field Marshal Frederick Sleigh Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts, Bt, VC, KG, KP, GCB, OM, GCSI, GCIE, KStJ, PC (1832–1914); Indian-born British soldier who regarded himself as Anglo-Irish — one of the most successful military commanders of the Victorian era.

"... it is noteworthy that Roberts was a Sepoy General, that is he was from the old Indian Army of the East India Company, not one of the Queen's officers. The result ... is that he shows love and respect for India and things Indian"; Jain 974; Riddick 401. ¶
