We are in the process of helping a friend liquidate a large collection of books spanning from the 18th century through the 20th. Conditions vary - many tattered and worn, many Fine. Some covers may be extremely worn, loose, or missing, while the contents are fine, and vice versa. Depending on rarity, our opening prices will be low with no reserve. The two old volumes offered here are hardbound in decorative boards. Each measure approximately 7 x 10-1/2" and are titled "Pictorial Fieldbook of The Revolution", by B.J. Lossing, published by Harper Bros., and dated 1860.

Condition wise, both volumes' covers show wear and are detached, spines are chipped and peeled. Volume 2, a few beginning end papers are loose, but other than that, the contents to both are very clean and very tight.

Pages lightly soiled, a few minor wear spots, signed on first Ep (undecipherable), Presentation on next page very faded with bookseller stamp, next EP with stamped name of Private J. F. Pettit of the 202nd Pennsylvania Volunteers, Co. A.  Also on rear EP, same stamp. This verifies this to be a genuine Civil War field carried Holy Bible!

Skirmishes at Salem October 8 and 16, 1864. Guarding Orange & Alexandria Railroad from Bull Run to Alexandria. Duty in the Defences of Washington and Alexandria till May, 1865. Ordered to Pennsylvania May 20. Duty in the Lehigh District coal regions of Pennsylvania till July. Mustered out at Harrisburg August 3, 1865.

Regiment lost during service 3 Enlisted men killed and 33 Enlisted men by disease. Total 36.

Translation of the French Manuel de l'anatomiste. 2 Volumes in one, separate title pages. 378, 305 pp. Very rare! Leatherbound covers and spine, head of spine has some loss, some tape on covers/spine that holds front board to spine, detached otherwise. Pages show browning and foxing. The provenance makes this truly amazing. There are some stamps in front demonstrating this was the property of W. R. Longshore, MD, of Hazelton, PA. Longshore was a surgeon in the Civil War, who served as a surgeon in the 147th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Infantry, making this a possible field carried and referenced manual! WILLIAM RIGHTER (DR.)7 LONGSHORE (ASHBEL BRITTAIN (DR.)6, ISAIAH5, ABNER4, EUCLYDUS (II)3, EUCLYDUS2, ROBERT (GENT.)1 LONGSHAW/LONGSHORE) was born September 10, 1838 in Beaver Meadows, Carbon Co., Penn., and died 1915 in Hazleton, Luzerne Co., Penn.. He married MATILDA A. CARTER April 25, 1865 in Hazleton, Luzerne Co., Penn., daughter of WILLIAM CARTER.

Notes for WILLIAM RIGHTER (DR.) LONGSHORE:

Union Soldier. Enlisted 20 Oct. 1862 "age 26" in Harrisburg, Penn. as an Asst. Surgeon, 147th Penn. Volunteers, attached to the 47th Regt. Penn. Volunteers, promoted to Surgeon and Major on 7 Dec. 1863. Commanding Brigade Hospital Surgeon in occupied Atlanta, he was with Gen. Sherman's famous march to the sea. Mustered out on 15 Jul. 1865.

Excerpt from: "General and Family History of the Wyoming & Lackawanna Valleys, Pennsylvania," Vol. 1, 1906: "Dr. Wm. R. Longshore, M.D., son of Ashbel B. and Maria J. (Righter) Longshore b 09/10/1838 in Beaver Meadows, Pennsylvania. Studied medicine at Jefferson Medical College and Pennsylvania College of Medicine from which he graduated March, 1860. Worked as an assistant in the male department of Pennsylvania Hospital for Insane under Dr. Kirkbride until 1862. Was Commander's assistant surgeon with rank of 1st Lt. in 147th Reg. Pennsylvania Volunteers in September 1863 and was promoted to surgeon and rank of Major."

Dr. W. R. Longshore, a prominent Hazleton surgeon whose parents both were descendants of Revolutionary families, tended to the wounded at some of the war's bloodiest campaigns. The Beaver Meadows native enlisted as a first lieutenant and assistant surgeon in Pardee's 147th Regiment at the outbreak of fighting. He was promoted to major and surgeon in 1863 and he served at the battles of Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge. Longshore was acting brigade surgeon during Sherman's march to Atlanta. When he reached Goldsborough, N.C., while accompanying Sherman through the Carolinas near the end of the war, Longshore obtained a leave in order to go home and get married. He reached Philadelphia on April 14, just a few hours before John Wilkes Booth shot Lincoln in Washington. Longshore continued on to Hazleton and on April 25 married M. A. Carter, daughter of Beaver Meadows coal operator William Carter. Twelve days later he was back in the Army.

1863 CIVIL WAR Field Relic SS Preble 8th MASS FOUND @ MARYLAND Book PSALMS Bible

You are bidding on a Book of Psalms( Printed in 1861, American Bible Society) that carries with it a very unique story.

 It has written on the first EP, verbatim, 'Found on Maryland Heights in July 1863 by S. S. Preble, Co C, 8th M V M.'

This pertains to Private/Musician Samuel S Preble, who was occupying the Heights at that time, and may have found this after a battle fought near or during that month, perhaps off of  the person of a perished soldier. This was a common practice, and these have been deemed at times 'war-time treasures' or 'field relics.' If you look VERY closely under Preble's signature, there is the erased remnants of the original soldiers info...now forever a mystery. This is truly a one of a kind find. The book shows lighter to mild wear and remains in very nice shape with some minor staining and wear. Good luck. More about Preble and his regiment below:

Field artillery is used to attack and defend fortifications; to destroy or demolish material obstacles , and thus prepare the way for the success of other arms; to act upon the-field of battle; to break an enemy's line or prevent him from forming; to crush his masses; to dismount his batteries; to follow and support in a pursuit, and to cover and protect a retreat.

Artillery Weapons: The calibre and description of the pieces now in use (1864) in the service of the United States are the 6-pounder and 12-pounder gun, the 12-pounder, 24-pounder, and 32-pounder howitzer, and the 12-pounder light gun sometimes called the gun-howitzer. Each piece is mounted on a carriage and pulled by a horse.

CONDITION: Good, Solid and Clean for being 147 years old. Spine has been replaced with morocco leather. Corners are rubbed. Flyleaves are chipped with stains. Presentation bookplate of Hobart College on front endpaper..Please contact with specific questions.

Published by Edgewood Publishing Co. The book measures 6 x 8 inches and is cloth-bound.

This book shows typical wear for its age. The rear interior hinge is split and a rear endpaper may have been removed. A previous owner's name is inside. But the text is clean and unmarked. Overall, a nice piece of original Civil War history.

Description:

Please, let me present to your attention a German military-fieldsdentist set, made by Emil Huber and intended for German Army during the WW II. It has neverbeen used!

This study contains 4 metal cases that sized as follows:

1. 68 cm x 45 cm x 28 cm approx. 26 ¾ in x 17 ¾ in x 11 in;  2. 68 cm x 45.9 cm x 28 cm approx. 27 in x 18 in x 11 in;

3. 75 cm x52.5 x 38 cm approx. 29 ½ in x 20 ½ in x 15 in,    4. 75 cm x 52.5 cm x 38 cm approx. 29 1/3 in x 20 ¾ in x 15 in.

The weight of each of them is about 40-50 kg. (some of themweigh may be more). But they are not measured exactly. They are heavy to beborne by one person. The description of the contents of the cases is accordingto the attached list in the set itself. According to my opinion: the set isfull but I am not an expert and it is possible some small parts to be missing orto exist others, not included in the description. (If youneed more pictures, please e-mail me and I will send you more photos). It isquite valid for the medicines inside. According to my opinion, the set hasnever been used and it is in very good antique condition. It is seen from theoriginal lubricant to preserve the condition of the instruments. It is in theform and appearance, done by the producer himself according to the requirementsfor usage by the German army during the WW II. We have not added or taken outanything else. The shipping price is f.o.b. airport customs, identified by thebuyer. Import and airport duties, taxes and charges are not included in theprice or shipping charges. These charges are the buyer?s responsibility. Theinsurance is included in the shipping price. The cases will be sent by aforwarding company to the Customs of an airport, specified by the buyer.

The set has a high collection value.
