(22 Dec 1837 - Feb. 6, 1867) 

Payne, Augustus L.  He was born about 1838 in New York.  He was the son of Elisha and Hannah Payne.

1850 Census: Pembroke, Genesee County, New York: Elisha Paine (age 54, farmer, born NH), Hannah Paine (age 45, born NH), Augustus L. Paine (age 12) and Daniel T. Paine (age 7)

1856 Iowa State Census: Wagner, Clayton County, Iowa: Elisha Payne (age 69, born NH, Farmer), Augustus Payne (age 18, born NY), Daniel Payne (age 13, born NY).  They had been in Iowa for 1/4 year  (Note:  there is an Elisha Payne buried in Farmersburg-Wagner Cemetery that died 1860 at age 67.).

1860 Census: Farmersburg, Clayton County, Iowa:  Augustus Payne (age 23, Laborer  - farmer, born New York) and Daniel Payne (age 19, laborer, born New York).  They were listed with a large family named Burnham.

Augustus Payne died Feb. 6, 1867 and is buried in Farmersburg-Wagner Cemetery, Wagner, Clayton County, Iowa

Note: There was also a D. T. Payne, died May 19, 1863, killed at Vicksburg, buried in Farmersburg-Wagner Cemetery.  I suspect this is his brother Daniel T. Payne.

 RARE COLLECTION OF ONE UNION CIVIL WAR SOLDIERS YEAR IN THE WAR

 

A This is not just an offering of a dead civil war soldier but a glimpse of family history in photos. It does consist of a unique collection of  23 letters , 22 from the soldier and one final one by his Sgt. to his family about his death in battle. All are written by a Union soldier, Demerest D. Hunter, starting on August 22, 1861 and going till June 22, 1862, which are written to his family members back home in Scotch Plains, NY. He was a regular in the 5th Regiment New York State Volunteers. The letters are those written and sent by him to his sister, brother, Mother, Father and Grandmother back in Scotch Plains, NY . Demerest was also the great great grandson of Cpt. Elijah Hunter. A double agent for George Washington, one of the nations first intelligence agents. “Elijah Hunter, 1775, was lieutenant in Capt. Daniel Mills' company, Col. James Holmes ' regiment, and was captain of grenadiers at the Battle of White Plains. He served as a delegate from Westchester county to the Assembly. He was born at New Castle, 1749, and died, 1815, at Mount Pleasant (Sing Sing).”

The letters are written from Camp Schuyler, Schuyler, NY; Camp Winfield, south of Yorktown, VA; Camp Warren, near West Point, VA; Camp Hanover, Hanover, VA; and his longest stay, Camp Federal Hill in Baltimore, MD.

For most of his stay in Camp Federal Hill, he worked on fortifying the stronghold under the supervision of General John Adams Dix. He wrote about his and other soldiers visits with locals, how they all enjoyed Baltimore the city and its people. He asks his family members for special things to be sent to him like butter, writing paper, cash, and a new revolver. He talks about a few excursions or recon trips his troop made to the Potomac and one in which they were expecting The Merrimack. He states how if he does not return that he represented his country and fought for its honor. He writes of how " If we get in a fight which is not very likely, I will never disgrace my country or family". His last letter is about his last call near Yorktown on the Chickasaw. These letters are followed by a very moving one written by his Sgt. C. C. Pike to his parents telling them of his death in battle and the honorable burial by his fellow soldiers. Really a very moving letter covering two pages. Beginning and end of which is in image below. Many of the letters have embossed printers' marks representing the Union. One letter is an embossed General with flag and underneath the words, "Brave In The Field, Wise In Council; A True Patriot. True To The Constitution."

This collection of letters also includes some 39 photos of which 15 are tin types of his surviving family and his sisters family with the Pound surname. To bad there are none of Demerest among them. Great genealogy material dated and age on family member photos dating from 1840  to 1900.  Images bearing the following family member names. His parents Edgar & Lydia Hunter (see image below), Annie Hiden, Will Davis, Ellen Hunter Pound, Jackson S. Pound, Elizabeth Pound Hart, Arthur Eugene Pound, Janice Pound Quin, Nellie Pound DeWald, Cicelia DeWald, Charles Coleman, Lydia Hunter Davis and others not identified.
The most interesting photo is a 6 x 8 in sepia of a family possibly those of Demerest in mourning clothing standing on a rocky shore.

In addition to the above, we are including 2 other images from what we are presuming is also the Pound family at a burial during WW1, one with honor guard firing their salute, which is in very poor condition, and the other a family burial plot in Presbyterian Cemetery on Brook Ave. near Watching Ave. North Plainfield, NJ with birth and death dates of those buried there, which is also in extremely poor condition, although it is 98% readable. Most are Pound & Stewart family members. (See image below)

So you have many years of two families history, not forgotten and saved. Maybe they will return to members of this family so they and future members may have a glimpse of their family ancestors history.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to own an intact collection from one soldier and his family. 2 original rare photos, Boer War Dead in Trenches 1900

2 photos of the dead in trenches at Natal during the Boer War, January 1900. I checked online and learned that while noone had these listed for sale outright, I could “buy the rights” from a vendor to use the image of one of these photos for one day for a mere $185.00. So our beginning price represents an excellent buy for the serious collector. These each measure 8.175” x 6” without the mounting. Condition is as shown in the photos below, and we rate that condition as good with the condition of the mounts being fair-to-good. This is a consignment sale.
