Merrill, Commander-in-Chief   _______   VOLUME I and VOLUME II ________   NEW YORK: STANLEY BRADLEY PUBLISHING COMPANY MDCCCXC SOLD ONLY BY SUBSCRIPTION ___________________________________   ACCEPTABLE condition.  Both volumes show numerous age spots particulary on front and back endpapers and first pages, internal pages/pictures are in very nice condition condition w/ limited foxing at edges.  Spines both volumes torn at seams and well worn at head and heel (see pictures). Corners bumped and rubbed. Hinges, both volumes, poor condition, covers of both volumes have  Gold lettering, both volumes, is clear and bright on front covers, however there seems to be some water or age damage on cover edges.  Gold lettering on spine clear but  spine itself on volume 2 in poor condition and separated from book. (see pictures). I looked through both volumes, page by page, to make sure there are no missing or damaged pages. Both volumes are complete, all pages and illustrations are present.Volume I has 474 pages plus prelims and endpages (yellow floral), Volume II has 444 pages plus prelims and endpages (yellow floral). Volume I has Full-Page prelim Illustrations of Abraham Lincolnand Jefferson Davis. These two full-page illustrations are separated by a tissue-paper divider; both illustrations are loose, resulting in chipped edges.  Both volumes have sections of pages that have come loose from the twine binding resulting in chipped edges (see pictures). Volume I   front pages are separated from binding but internal pages themselves are all attached and fine.  Volume II has a section of  loose pages (page 40 to page 52 ) pages 50 and 52 have some damage at edges from the separation. These volumes are very large and very heavy.    The outside edges of book are discolored and have white powdery edging. The covers are separed from the volume of text,  but the text and pictures are in remarkably good condition for  One hundred and twenty-two years. No writing or marking, no stamps or tags.NOT ex-library books. this two volume set has  cosmetic issues But the CONTENT is amazing . Almost every other page is a  huge Double-Page Illustration. BATTLE MAPS abound. Well-known battles and leaders are discussed as well as little known battles and leaders that were ignored by most Civil War histories of the era.ILLUSTRATIONS are varied and incredible in detail.
