CIVIL WAR Pictorial History UNION CONFEDERATE Army & Navy Battles ILLUSTRATED

THE
PICTORIAL HISTORY
OF
THE GREAT CIVIL WAR

Original 1881 Edition of “The Pictorial History of the Great Civil War” by John Laird Wilson :: Published by Bryan, Taylor & Co. New York:: Measures 8 x 10 1/4" :: Complete with a whopping 976 Pages.

Title Continues: Embracing Full and Authentic Accounts of Battles by Land and Sea, with Graphic Descriptions of Heroic Deeds Achieved by Armies and Individuals; Narratives of Personal Adventure; Thrilling Incidents; Daring Exploits; Wonderful Escapes; Life in Camp, Field, and Hospital; Adventures of Blockade Life, Etc. Containing Carefully Prepared Biographies of The Leading Generals and Naval Commanders. Embellished with Numerous Fine Steel-Plate Engravings of Battle Scenes, and With Portraits of Leading Generals.

Of histories, general and special, relating to the Civil War a number have been published, but they were nearly all written at a period so close to the war that the writers unconsciously biased by the strong feelings which they shared in common with their fellow-citizens during the occurrence of the events they relate. Time had not softened their prejudices sufficiently to enable them to write with the judicial calmness necessary to the proper treatment of such a subject. It has been the author's aim to present a continuous narrative, covering the entire area of the civil war operations, both military and naval, and free from those interruptions which in general history are unavoidable.

The author Wilson drew upon numerous sources From "History of the Civil War in America by Lossing," "The Lost Cause by Pollard," "The Great Civil War by Tomes and Smith,"The Battle of Gettysburg by Samuel P. Bates," and many others. Wilson covers every significant event of the Civil War with vigor including such prominent battles of Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Bull Run; Naval Engagements of the Merrimac on Monitor; Key political acts by Lincoln; Prominent Military generals from Grant to Lee, and much more. As the title suggests, this book is filled throughout with numerous illustrations. A very complete, overlooked, HUGE, and strikingly beautiful Civil War account.

GOOD PLUS CONDITION: A tightly bound volume, generally clean pages without the occasional spot of foxing, notable flaws include one loose page and neatly strengthened bookbinders cloth to hinges, Complete with all pages & Illustrations. A very attractive copy of this lavishly illustrated Civil War title.

HARPERS PICTORIAL HISTORY OF THE WAR WITH SPAIN 1898-1899 * FULL FOLIO w/ BONUS

HARPER'S PICTORIAL HISTORY OF THE WAR WITH SPAIN Published:  Harper & Brothers,1898 - 1899.  Sold on subscription.

Folio:  32 volumes with a dozen or so sheets each. 17 x 12" wide with soft brown covers.  Slick rag pages with no foxing. A leather binder was offered at additional cost but these have never been bound.

-Introduction is by Major General Nelson A. Miles, commanding the U.S. Army. Special articles by war correspondents and contributors numbering over 27, including Frederick Remington, Hon. John Barrett, Casper Whitney, Henry Starr Richardson and many others.

-Dozens of full page color and black and white pictures, illustrations, plates and photographs by celebrated artists and photographers who were sent with the troops and fleet and on special duty - including Remington, James Burton, C. McKnight Smith, J.A. Cahill and many others.  Many maps in color and black and white.

-Illustrations and reports by Frederick Remington, Jno Fox, Jr., John Peters, Clara Barton, Generals, Partington (The Red Cross in California)

Volume 25 is dedicated to the 9th Cavalry (Black Cavalry) with full color plate

Volume 29 is dedicated to  Women's part in the war with writings by Clara Barton and others..

Condition:

All very good, clean, whole, but Volume 32, the last one, back cover and 2 pages of index  have 1/2 page gone vertically.  In stamping, Harpers erred and misnumbered #21-29 and crossed out and stamped on the correct numbers.  In volume 3, they just penned it on.  The volumes 10-13 appear to be missing pages, but all previous and following PAGE numbers are in sequence and all content appears intact which is obviously another Harper numbering error.

All volumes have a full color First page; some are maps, some are ships or mounted and foot soldiers, including the Black 9th Cavalry charging at San Juan.  In the women's section, a few nice words are said on behalf of "our faithful colored troops" who were injured and sent to California to be nursed back to health.

The paper covers are very bright and clear with no surface damage.  The covers show edge wear with some crumbling and small tears but nothing missing except as noted above; the back few pages.  All interior pages are in like-new condition with no foxing, rips, tears or stains.   Fine, bright and crisp.

This set is huge, weighing about 14 pounds.  It is an amazing set and strikingly beautiful with plates of battleships, battles, maps, troops and much more.  This is quite a rare and exciting history of this war.

Bonus offer:  Offered with this set are 3 volumes having association with this war and it's aftermath concerning the Philippines and our involvement in that country at the end of the war with Spain.  They are all in excellent condition, with clean bright rag pages, many pictures in Volume III.  All volumes show shelf wear but pages are intact.

1.  Report of the Philippine Commission to the President 1900 - Volume II Testimony and Exhibits.  Published in Washington DC by the Government Printing Office in 1901.  "Letter of Transmittal" in the front shows the members of the Commission and John R. MacArthur, Secretary is dated April 27, 1900.  The Report was presented to the Senate and the House of Representatives on May 14. 1900 by President McKinley.  There are no photos or plates in this volume. 495 pages. Approx. 6 1/2" x 9".  It is entirely concerned with the questioning of witnesses and authorities by the Commission addressing the troubles and resistance by Aquinaldo and followers, churches involvement and other occupation matters. Very good condition.

2.  Report of the Philippine Commission to the President 1900 - Volume III.  Published in Washington DC by the Government Printing Office in 1901. "Letter of Transmittal" in the front shows all the members of the Commission and John R. MacArthur, Secretary and Counsel, December 20, 1900.  Dozens of black and white photographs throughout the volume and a full page color photo opposite the title page. 443 pages. Approx. 6 1/2" x 9". Beautifully bound in silky-like maroon cloth with hardcovers.  The book is entirely intact with no rips, tears, creases or marks of any kind. Text and pictures clear, clean and bright.  The cover has shelf denting and rubbing on the top and bottom of the spine and slight rubbing wear on the edges.  Corners are slightly bumped.  This is heavy....approx. 4-5 pounds.  Very good condition.

3.  Annual Reports of the War Department for the Fiscal Year Ended June 30, 1906 - Volume VII Report of the Philippine Commission Part 1.  Published in Washington DC by the Government Printing Office in 1907. There is a report by the Chief of the Bureau of Insular Affairs (Acting Chief Frank McIntyre, Captain, 10th U.S. Infantry)  to the Secretary of War (who was William Howard Taft).  There are no photos or plates in this volume...but it is packed with incredible information on everything from Agriculture and Banking to crowd control and housing.  Fascinating read.  735 pages.  Approx 6 1/2" x 9".  Black heavy cloth cover.  No rips, tears or stains but yellowing of the pages by age.  The paper quality is not nearly as good as the other two volumes.  All pages are intact.  The cover and spine show denting from shelf wear and the lettering on the spine is sunfaded.  Good condition for it's age.

Seller will pay shipping, handling and insurance for the full amount of purchase price for Domestic US only. Shipping will be via the most economical that will provide delivery confirmation.  PayPal.
