Vintage SOUTH AFRICA ZULU & BOER WAR, BRITISH MILITARY Paper Lot, 1877-1900 more

This interesting lot of SOUTH AFRICAN & BRITISH MILITARY COLLECTIBLES comes from a lode of material we picked up a number of years ago from an old, venerated bookstore in Seattle which went out of business after 100 years of service. We were able to purchase a large lot of ephemera dating from roughly 1840 to 1930 - including loose pages from a variety of the BEST ILLUSTRATED AND RESPECTED MAGAZINES AND JOURNALS of the day. Many of these magazines and journals include scholarly and entertaining articles on many subjects of interest -- many having never been reprinted in any form.

In our "spare" time we have been selecting many hard-to-get subjects from this group and putting together some scarce and highly interesting material.

This group of 20 sheets come from HARPER'S ILLUSTRATED WEEKLY & ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS. Pages measure on average about 11" x 16". ALL ARE FULL PAGES UNLESS OTHERWISE DESCRIBED.

This group contains the following:

Page with full article and 3/4 page montage engraving - SKETCHES IN CAFFRARIA - showing DUTCH BOER TREKKERS, A CAFFRA QUADRILLE PARTY and more, 1877 (see PIC # 2);

Page with most of an article and a 3/4 page engraving - THE ZULU WAR - FORT EKOWE - COLONEL PEARSON, 1879 (see PIC # 3);

DOUBLE-PAGE ENGRAVING AND FULL ARTICLE - THE ZULU WAR - SCENE OF THE BATTLE OF ISANDULA, WITH LORD CHELMSFORD'S ADVANCING COLUMN, [badly torn along center fold], 1879 (see PIC # 4);

DOUBLE-PAGE ENGRAVING AND FULL ARTICLE - WITH THE ENGLISH IN ZULULAND - showing COLONEL PEARSON'S COLUMN CROSSING THE TUGELA RIVER - also has one-page engraving on reverse showing THE ZULU WAR - NATAL MOUNTED POLICE, UNDER MAJOR DARNTNELL, [badly torn along all folds with some old tape repairs], 1879 (see PIC # 5);

Four pages on THE MATABILI INSURRECTION - full short article - one DOUBLE-PAGE ILLUSTRATION showing DEFEAT OF THE REBELS BETWEEN MOVENE KRAAL AND GWELO - also two 3/4 page illustrations showing TAYLOR'S FORT AND CROW'S NEST OUTSIDE BULUWAYO and SCOUTS LOOKING FOR THE ENEMY - also two small photographs featuring KING KHAMA & HIS THIRD BRIDE, SEFHAKWANE, 1896 (see PICS # 6, 7 & 8);

Page with 3/4 page illustration - THE WAR IN SOUTH AFRICA - BOER PICKETS READING THE BIBLE, 1900 (see PIC # 9, right side);

Page with full article front and back and 6 photo and other illustrations - THE PORT OF TRANSVAAL - DELAGOA BAY AS A FACTOR IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN WAR - 1871 (see PIC # 9, left side);

Page with full short article on PROGRESS OF THE BOER WAR, 1900 (not shown);

Page with 3 drawings and captions - THE WAR IN SOUTH AFRICA - showing HIGHLANDERS SIGNALLING AT MODDER RIVER, MEN OF THE ROYAL IRISH REGIMENT COVERING THE RETIREMENT OF THE AUSTRALIANS ON MODDER'S FARM and more, 1900 (see PIC # 10);

Page with 3 drawings and captions - THE WAR IN SOUTH AFRICA - showing BRITISH SENTRY, THE CITY IMPERIAL VOLUNTEERS IN ACTION, & A DETACHMENT OF SOUTH-AFRICAN LIGHT HORSE SCOUTING BLOEMFONTEIN, 1900 (see PIC # 10);

Full page with full article front and back with 4 photos - BESEIGED IN KIMBERLEY - showing DUGOUTS FOR THE SHELTER OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN, A SIGNAL LIGHT, KENILWORTH BARRICADE, ROYAL ARTILLERY IN ACTION, and more, 1900 (not shown);

Page with 3/4 page photo of THE RT. HON. CECIL JOHN RHODES, 1900 (see PIC # 11);

Two page full article and 6 photos - THE ADVANCE ON PRETORIA FROM KRONSTAD TO THE RHENOSTER RIVER, 1900 (not shown);

Full page illustration - A BOER COMMANDO ON PARADE, circa 1900 (not shown).

Condition is generally FAIR to GOOD (all pages have moderate to heavy corner and edge wear and some mostly light finger smudges from general handling; several have edge tears; all have creases from handling; some have occasional foxing; SOME PAGES MAY BE YELLOWED AND BRITTLE FROM AGE).

Shipping & handling for this item is $4.00 Media Mail to anywhere in the U.S., though buyers in Alaska and Hawaii may want to request a faster option; insurance, delivery confirmation and other shipping extras must be requested by the winner.
