DIARY Selectman 1862 Civil WAR Enlister JOURNAL Americana WINDSOR County VERMONT

AUTHENTIC PERSONAL JOURNAL OF ALFRED SARGENT
-a man of many accomplishments-
BRIDGEWATER CORNERS VERMONT SELECTMAN
CIVIL WAR VERMONT 14TH/15TH/SHARPSHOOTERS ENLISTING TOWN AGENT
TOWN SUPERVISOR
DELEGATOR
JUSTICE OF THE PEACE
FIRE AGENT
BRIDGE AGENT
...and more

This is truly a remarkable piece of American history. This is the personal diary of Alfred Sargent, son of Calvin Sargent of Bridgewater Corners, VT, handwritten in the a diary of 1862. Bound in period leather much in the style of the famous haversack Bibles carried in the Civil War, complete with the tuck flap system with a gilt stamped title on top, lightly weathered and soiled as shown. The contents are very interesting and refelct the stab of war into the small town life of a town agent. It contains the usual entries for ledgers, including livestock, shoes, liquor/brandy/gin/rum (he was a drinker), lumber for bridges etc, but the interesting and standout contents are the ones surrounding Sargent's tasks involving the War. There are dozens of entries where he pays soldiers wives and families money, probably his task from the givernment as a town agent. He also takes on enlistment and proceeds to enlist many soldiers, which he notes in the diary as well. Finally, he lists the dates of muster for the 14th VT, the 15th VT, the 16th VT, and the VT Sharpshooters as they left. Truly interesting with room for much wonder as to what else this 47 year old (at the time of this diary) was all about.

ALFRED SARGENT

In 1913...perhaps with the recent Veteran's Encampment at Gettysburg in mind...a number of veterans gathered together to donate their batlle honored regimental battle flags to the County Historical Society in Pottsville, Schuylkill County.

"On December 14th, 1913, there occurred one of the most solemn, patriotic and affecting ceremonies ever held anywhere. In the presence of 2,000 people in Pottsville's largest theatre, twenty two battle flags and guidons, carried during the Civil War by Schuylkill County troops, were transferred by the old soldiers to the custody of the Historical Society..."

The flags included that of the "First Defenders". the Washington Artillerists, (which was originally carried in the Mexican War), the flags of the 48th PVI , the 96th PVI, the 7th Pa. Cavalry Regiment..

The presenters also talked about what were then more recent matters: the participation of Schuylkill Countians in the Spanish American War of 1898 and subsequent affairs in those far off islands.

In 1932, the Society finally got around to printing a transcript of those proceedings, published as Vol. V No. 2 of the Publications of the Historical Society of Schuylkill County : Proceedings and Speeches Made At The Transfer of Battle Flags to the Historical Society....December 14, 1913.

Wraps, 43 pages, printed by the Pottsville Journal Plant, 1932.

Condition: Very nice condition, some sunning on front cover, contents still clean and bright, no writing, underlining, etc.

Folks, these don't show up every day. If you want this one, don't delay....I've only got this one copy, when it's gone, it's gone.

Feel free to contact me with any questions.
