Rare CONFEDERATE Winston NC Civil War 1861 Newspaper **Image058(Note: additional images are located below the description)Shown is an original & historic old newspaper, offered to enhance your collectible interest: WESTERN SENTINEL, Winston, N.C., Sept. 27, 1861

* Rare Confederate title
* Jefferson Davis

This is a very rare title from the Confederacy. According to Brigham only four institutions in the United States have any holdings of this title from the Civil War, most just a few scattered issues. The American Antiquarian Society has no issues recorded from this era.

Content in this issue includes, on the ftpg., a report headed "Victory Gained by Gen. Wise" which describes the battle near "Hawk's Nest". There is another report under "Important from Western Virginia--The Battle on the Gauley" which mentions Big Swell Mountain. A letter from the Surgeon General of North Carolina states that the "...General Military Hospital for taking care of the sick and wounded of the North Carolina troops will be established in Petersburg, Virginia...", plus details about the various supplies that will be required to maintain the hospital and care for the soldiers, signed in type: Charles E. Johnson. Under "Major-General Leonidas Polk" is a textual sketch of Polk, often called "The Fighting Bishop". Pg. 2 has an endorsement: "For President: JEFFERSON DAVIS, Of Mississippi. For Vice-President: Alex. H Stephens, of Georgia." Four pages, some light foxing, generally nice condition.
