1895 JOHN SHERMAN Recollections Civil War 2 Vols 1st Ed

John Sherman: Recollections of Forty Years in the House, Senate, and Cabinet: An Autobiography (in two volumes). First edition. Chicago: The Werner Company, 1895. Pictorial gilt-stamped brown cloth, 9.5 x 7 in., 1239 pages, illustrated. A touch of very mild rubbing to extremities, and tear with skinning and small loss to front flyleaf of Vol. I (evidently caused by a small spot of adhesive to pastedown), otherwise fresh, bright, and very fine. As clean and handsome a copy as you could ever hope to find!

A superb, near pristine set of this important, amply illustrated memoir, chronicling the career of his prominent Ohio politician (1823 - 1900), who variously served as U.S. Representative, Senator, Secretary of the Treasury, and Secretary of State. A large portion of Volume I is given over to his chronicle of the Civil War and its effects, while entire single chapters are devoted to the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and the impeachment of Andrew Johnson (one section of the Johnson chapter is subtitled "Why I Favored Conviction"). Other topics/chapters include Feuds and Jealousies During Grant's Administration; The Panic of 1873 and Its Results; The Hayes-Tilden Presidential Contest; and others.

Uncommon in such an appealing state of preservation.
