New Hampshire volunteers bravely served in major battles at Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Antietam as well as many more throughout the length of the Civil War. The state sent 18 Volunteer Regiments of Infantry into the conflict. In all, more than 30,000 men served the Union Army. This does not include the number of men who joined other State Organizations and those who joined the United States Military.

First Edition. Published 1890 by Sentinel Printing Co. in Keene, New Hampshire. 511 pages. Hardcover. 6" x 9". Embellished with 22 engraved portraits with tissue guards and 12 intext illustrations.

The First New Hampshire Volunteer Regiment filled its ranks within two weeks of President Lincoln's call for 70,000 men on April 15, 1861. 2,004 men volunteered to fight for the Union in the American Civil War. The volunteers organized and mustered at Camp Union in Concord between May 1 and May 7, 1861. The 1st NH was commanded by Colonel Mason Tappan.

The 1st NH moved to Washington, D.C. and was assigned to Stone's Brigade and later to General Patterson's Army of the Shenandoah. From the Rockville Expedition the unit saw action at Conrad's Ferry. Moved to Poolesville, Williamsport, Martinsburg, Winchester, Charlestown, Harper's Ferry and Sandy Hook.

Subsequent to the unit being mustered out, many of the troops transferred to other regiments.

CONDITION: Very Nice Copy. Some discoloration and edgewear to the binding. Internally, Clean and Tight. The hinges are fine. Please contact me with specific questions.
