Among the names of those RAF men whose gallantry and skill earned the public's deep gratitude and captured its imagination one, that of Group-Captain Leonard Cheshire, V.C., D.S.O., D.F.C., stands alone. Leonard Cheshire led the immortal 617 Squadron during the Second World War and he perfected the most hair-raising bombing technique ever conceived. He not only took a major part in the bombing raids that shook the world but he also made a point of remaining over the target in order to report the damage in detail. Furthermore, Cheshire flew so low over enemy territory that he had the unique experience of guns firing down upon him and his courage was summed up in the V.C. Citation which said of him: He has a reputation second to none in Bomber Command.

The author has pieced together this intimate and fascinating story using material previously unavailable and enjoyed the full co-operation and collaboration of Cheshire himself and many people who knew him personally.

The book is in very good condition for its age, some foxing on the closed page ends and rear endpapers, just the odd page with a spot. The hardcover has scuffed corners and slight scuffed edges.
