HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: At the height of the American Civil War, Abraham Lincoln delivered The Gettysburg Address on November 19, 1863 at the dedication of the Soldier’s National Cemetery in Pennsylvania. Approximately fifteen to twenty thousand people attended the dedication where they heard the two-hour oration by Edward Everett. Following Everett’s speech, President Lincoln delivered fewer than three hundred words that are considered among the most powerful and frequently quoted speeches in history, especially at July 4th and Memorial Day Services.
