Samuel C. Reid, Jr., Scouting Expeditions of McCulloch's Texas Rangers, 1859

Reid, Jr., Samuel C. The Scouting Expedition of McCulloch’s Texas Rangers; or, the Summer and Fall Campaign of the Army of the United States in Mexico – 1846; Including Skirmishes with the Mexicans, and an Accurate Detail of the Storming of Monterey; also, the Daring Scouts at Buena Vista Together with Anecdotes, Incidents, Descriptions of Country, and Sketches of the Lives of the Celebrated Partisan Chiefs, Hays, McCulloch and Walker. Philadelphia: G. G. Evans & Co., 1859. Octavo, publisher’s gilt blocked cloth, 251 pages including a double-page map + 11 black and white illustrative plates (including frontis) + 4 pages adverts.

Barely 20 years old when the Mexican-American War commenced in 1846, the Texas Rangers played an important role in several battles of that War; led by John Coffee ‘Jack’ Hayes, Ben McColloch and Samuel Hamilton Walker, the Rangers would see action in the Civil War, ultimately growing into the law enforcement agency par excellence they are today. For your consideration is this exciting account of the Rangers and their involvement in the Mexican-American War.

Condition notes: Good. This octavo, measuring 8 inches by 4 ¾ inches, is bound in the original publisher’s gilt blocked cloth. The front board is partially detached, and there is moderate foxing throughout. This is a great copy for the Texas Ranger scholar, collector or historian interested in reading the 1859 edition.
